Perception is everything
When you buy bananas, do you avoid the ones with brown spots on them? What about people? If they drive a piece of crap or live in a trailer park – or on the street… If they have a scar on their face, purple hair, tattoos, piercings…. will you make the same effort to befriend them?
Is your glass half empty or half full? There are a couple psychological theories to your answer of this question;
A common expression, generally used rhetorically to indicate that a particular situation could be a cause for optimism (half full) or pessimism (half empty), or as a general litmus test to simply determine an individual’s worldview. (wikipedia)
The point though, is no matter your answer, there’s still the same amount in your glass.
This life is full of choices, but there are a lot of things that you may feel are out of your hands. For example, the sun rises and sets regardless of our choices – In cases like these, your perception can change how difficult or easy it is to make decisions going forward or live with the reality of not having the ability to contribute a decision.
If someone says something while they’re in a poor mood it’s easy to perceive things in a negative way. But if that same someone had said the exact same thing just in a kinder mood, chances are the message is less likely to be lost.
Are you making the best of your situation or dwelling on the “little things”? Are you holding onto consequences that couldn’t be controlled?
